Baltimore—The Baltimore City Breast and Cervical Cancer Program (BCCP) at MedStar Union Memorial and MedStar Harbor Hospitals has been awarded a five-year contract with the Department of Health and Mental Hygiene to provide free lifesaving screenings to Baltimore City women.
This $6.7 million contract helps the MedStar hospitals continue to reduce breast and cervical health disparities among high-risk women in Baltimore City. Since its inception in 2002, the BCCP at MedStar Union Memorial and MedStar Harbor offers free mammograms, breast exams and pap tests for women living in Baltimore City who are between 40 and 64 years old, underinsured or uninsured and live on a limited income.
Over the past five years, the BCCP has provided: • 8,051 mammograms
• 7,427 breast exams
• 3,531 pap tests
• 477 biopsies
• 754 surgeon referrals for abnormal results Based on the provided screenings, the BCCP detected:• 98 breast cancers
