Baltimore—Daryl Osbahr, MD, attending orthopaedic surgeon and director of Sports Medicine Research at MedStar Union Memorial Hospital, has been honored nationally for his pioneering research efforts in the area of orthopaedics and sports medicine. Awarded for his studies on ulnar collateral ligament (UCL) injuries in high level athletes, Dr. Osbahr has been identified as a leading innovator by the American Shoulder and Elbow Surgeons (ASES) and the American Orthopaedic Society for Sports Medicine (AOSSM).
The ASES has named Dr. Osbahr the winner of the 2013 ASES Research Grant, which was awarded for his proposal titled, “Impact of the Pattern and Size of an Ulnar Collateral Ligament Tear on Contact Pressure and Area in the Posteromedial Compartment of the Elbow.”
The ASES awards only one grant per year. Designed to encourage new investigators, the ASES Research Grant provides seed and start-up funding for promising shoulder and elbow surgeons conducting innovative research projects.
Dr. Osbahr also has been honored by the AOSSM. As the primary investigator, Dr. Osbahr’s clinical research project, which focused on UCL reconstruction in competitive baseball players, was awarded the 2013 O'Donoghue Sports Injury Award.
This award, recognizing Dr. Osbahr’s vast contribution to orthopaedic sports medicine research, is given annually to the best overall clinical based research dealing with orthopaedic sports medicine.
Co-authored by E. Lyle Cain Jr., MD; B. Todd Raines, MA, ATC; Dave Fortenbaugh, PhD; Jeffrey R. Dugas, MD; and James R. Andrews, MD; the project, titled “Long-Term Outcomes After Ulnar Collateral Ligament Reconstruction in Competitive Baseball,” will be considered for publication in The American Journal of Sports Medicine.
