Three-Star Ranking Given for Performance Data
Baltimore, MD — (August 6, 2011) — The Union Memorial Hospital Open Heart program, and its four cardiovascular surgeons, earned three stars to rank tops in the state for overall performance, patient survival rates, complications and other quality measures, by Consumer Reports magazine this week.
Union Memorial heart surgeons Drs. Michael Fiocco, Luis A. Dibos, Jeffrey E. Sell and Alex Sang Na were named.
In Maryland, only one other heart program ranked on the list: NIH Heart Center at Suburban Hospital.
“This isn’t just about surgical outcomes,” said Dr. Fiocco, Chief of Open Heart Surgery. “It’s about the entire program consistently functioning as a team, taking what we’ve learned from performing beating heart, or off-pump by-pass surgeries, since the inception of this program and evolving into the quality heart program that was envisioned when we started. It’s truly an honor to be recognized for that.”
The rankings, made in collaboration with the Society of Thoracic Surgeons, published its list, awarding one, two or three starts to surgical practices that share their performance data on patient survival, surgical complications, and adherence to guidelines on medication use and follow up care. About 90-percent of the nation’s surgical groups which perform heart bypass surgery responded.
These ratings are based on 512 heart bypass operations performed between July 2009 and June 2010.
