Since the Center was established by Dr. Raymond M. Curtis in 1975, our staff has been dedicated to treating and preventing injuries and other disabling conditions of the hand, wrist, arm, elbow and shoulder. But our expertise and commitment had their roots about 25 years before that, in 1948, when Dr. Curtis returned from his tour of duty with the U.S. Army, newly trained in hand surgery.

Over the years, Union Memorial Hospital and Dr. Curtis gained a far-reaching reputation for the successful and innovative treatment of hand and arm problems. Today, The Curtis National Hand Center is the one of the United States' most recognized leaders in the treatment and rehabilitation of the hand and arm. From repairing traumatic injuries to treating repetitive motion injuries, arthritic conditions and congenital deformities, our goal is to restore the patient's use of the hand and arm to the greatest degree possible.

Our long history of experience, outstanding medical staff, and state-of-the-art facilities and equipment combine to create a treatment center that is unequaled in the mid-Atlantic region. Additionally, the Center has been designated by Congress as the "National Center for the Treatment of the Hand and Upper Extremity."
