Dr. Lew Schon Voted Today to Prestigious Leadership Role
National Harbor, MD July 9 – Dr. Lew C. Schon, Director of Foot and Ankle Services at Union Memorial Hospital in Baltimore, was elected Vice President of the Board of Directors of the American Orthopaedic Foot & Ankle Society (AOFAS) today during the Society’s 26th Annual Summer Meeting in National Harbor, Maryland.
“We have continued to meet our pledge to advance clinical care, public safety, research, and education in the United States and abroad. Our efforts to engage and respond to our members, patients, medical peers, government, and society-at-large have been productive. We will look to expand our outreach efforts to inspire residents and medical students to pursue careers in our field. Growing the interconnectivity and networking strength of our society remains an important focus, achieved through conferences, meetings and social media. As our presence nationally and internationally grows, we will maintain our prominence as leaders in patient care, research, education, and innovation.” said Schon.
Dr. Schon is also Assistant Professor, Department of Orthopaedics at Johns Hopkins University and Clinical Associate Professor of Orthopaedic Surgery at Georgetown University Medical Center. He earned his medical degree from Albany Medical College in Albany, NY, completed his residency at Hospital for Joint Diseases Orthopaedic Institute, NY, and fellowship in foot and ankle at the University of Texas Health Science Center at Houston. Dr. Schon was an AO Scholar in Foot and Ankle Surgery at the University of Washington/Harborview Medical Center in Seattle.
Prior to his election as Vice President, Dr. Schon served two years as AOFAS Treasurer. He also served on the Post-Graduate Testing Committee, Sports Medicine Committee, Fellowship Training Committee, and Membership Committee. He continues to serve as faculty for numerous AOFAS courses as well as Annual Summer Meetings, Specialty Day programs and Pre-meeting Courses. Dr. Schon is a two time recipient of the prestigious Roger Mann Award and J. Leonard Goldner Award.
Active in several professional societies, Dr. Schon serves on the Corporate Relations Committee of the Orthopaedic Education and Research Foundation (OREF), and served on the Foot & Ankle Program Subcommittee of the American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons (AAOS). He serves frequently as course faculty and invited lecturer and is the recipient of numerous research grants including the Humana award, the first AOFAS research award in 1991.
The American Orthopaedic Foot & Ankle Society is a professional society of more than 1,800 orthopaedic surgeons specializing in diagnosis, care and treatment of patients with disorders of the musculoskeletal system of the foot and ankle.
