Common Sleep Disorders
Obstructive Sleep Apnea Syndrome (OSAS)
obstruction of the upper airway during sleep that results in breathing pauses and sleep disruption. Patients frequently complain of loud snoring and excessive daytime sleepiness. Most frequently occurs in men and pregnant women.
Central Sleep Apnea
caused by problems with how the brain controls breathing resulting in breathing pauses during sleep; 40 percent of congestive heart failure patients suffer from this disorder.
Narcolepsy
causes people to experience excessive daytime sleepiness and uncontrollable episodes of sleep.
Insomnia
an inability to fall asleep or awaking too early; may be caused by poor sleep habits, alcohol, medications or stress.
Periodic Limb Movement Disorder (PLMD)
frequent leg jerks or movements that disrupt sleep.
Restless Leg Syndrome
the uncontrollable urge to move legs at night.
