Interview and Application Process

PGY 1 Applicants:

Thank you for inquiring about the Internal Medicine Training Program at MedStar Union Memorial Hospital in Baltimore, Maryland.  We are pleased you are considering our program and welcome your application.  MedStar Union Memorial will participate in the Match and will only be accepting applications through ERAS for the 2013 PGY 1 classWe will continue our policy of not offering any outside of the match or 'pre-match' positions.

IMPORTANT NOTICE:  The ERAS invitation process will begin for MUMH categorical and preliminary medicine on Monday, September 17, 2012 and continue through December.  All applications submitted by Monday, October 15, 2012 will be treated equally.  Applications received after October 15 will be invited if openings are still available when the application is reviewed.  Therefore, we strongly encourage applicants to submit their applications by October 15, 2012.  Interviews will begin October 22, 2012 and continue at least through December 21, 2012.

  1. The Residency Coordinator downloads applications from the Electronic Residency Application Service (ERAS) starting September, 2012.
  2. After review of applications, individuals selected for an interview will receive an invitation email via the Interview Broker scheduling system which includes a unique link to our residency interview calendar.
  3. Selected applicants choose their preferred interview day on the online calendar and may reschedule as needed through the Interview Broker system.
  4. Once scheduled, interviewees will receive a confirmation email and interview day details from the scheduling system.
  5. Interview half-day (a.m.):
    • Welcome and introduction to the program from the Program Director or Associate Program Director (breakfast provided)
    • Attend Morning Report
    • MedStar Union Memorial Hospital Tour
    • Interview with the Program Director and core faculty/chief resident (usually two interviews total)
  6. Interview half-day (p.m.):
    • Welcome and introduction to the program from the Program Director or Associate Program Director (lunch provided)
    • Attend Noon Conference
    • MedStar Union Memorial Hospital Tour
    • Interview with the Program Director and core faculty/chief resident (usually two interviews total)

  • We prefer Step I and II USMLE scores to be 210 or above.
  • An ECFMG certificate is required.
  • We do have International Medicine Graduates in our program.
  • We prefer candidates who completed medical school three (3) years prior to their application.
  • Three letters of recommendation are required.  It is very beneficial to your application if these letters are from clinical or research faculty that you have directly worked with in the US or Canada.
  • Three (3) months or more of Clinical experience in the US or Canada greatly improves the likelihood of being invited for an interview.
  • We begin interviewing in October and will continue through early January.
  • We do sponsor J1 and H1B visas.  No Caps on H1B.
  • PGY 1 preliminary positions are highly competitive and go only to applicants who plan to pursue residency training in the fields of anesthesia, radiology, ophthalmology, psychiatry, neurology, etc.
