Laboratory Careers
Our Laboratory staff provides essential services to patients by performing tests and processing their results so that physicians will have quality information to assist in the development of patient diagnoses and treatment plans. Although they may be found out of view by most patients and visitors, the Lab staff are completely focused upon and dedicated to quality patient care.
Laboratory Medicine at Union Memorial Hospital is comprised of the following major areas:
- Chemistry, Hematology, Immunology (General Lab)
- Blood Banking (Transfusion Services)
- Emergency Lab
- Specimen Processing and Calvert Outreach Services
- Microbiology
- Histology and Cytology (Pathology)

A balance between life and work
Laboratory staff often works on a rotating basis to cover weekends (usually every 3rd or 4th). In some areas, a weekend option may be available. Full-time, part-time and on-call hours are available. More flexible scheduling options are currently under consideration and sign-on bonuses may be available for designated positions.
Education/advancement opportunities
Educational Assistance Benefit. Full-time employees can be reimbursed up to a maximum of $3,000 in a calendar year for approved courses. Benefits-eligible part-time employees are eligible for 50 percent of the full-time benefit, or $1,500 in a calendar year.
Licensure and certification
The following are professional positions that require a BS or AA degree (as indicated) and certification:
- Medical Technologist (MT)
- Medical Lab Technician (MLT) (AA)
- Histotechnologist (HTL)
- Histotechnician (HT) (AA)
- Cytotechnologist (CT)
The following positions are also found in the Medical Laboratory and require specialized training or certification:
- Phlebotomy Technician
- Clinical Lab Technician
