Injury Prevention
MedStar Union Memorial offers strength and conditioning programs in order to help athletes improve performance and prevent injuries. Certified strength and conditioning specialists work with athletes to develop individualized regimens to address strength, speed, power, balance and flexibility. An individualized plan is of utmost importance because what works for one athlete may hinder another. Factors such as fatigue, nutritional status, stage of development and the athlete’s chosen sport must be considered prior to designing a training program.
Jay Dyer, a certified strength and conditioning specialist with Union Memorial Sports Medicine, trains high school, college and elite athletes at the Merritt Athletic Club in Cockeysville, Md. He structures each plan to allow the athlete to progress steadily and gradually with training loads appropriate for his or her ability. It may include stretching, weight training, running and other exercises and will develop the core (abdominal, back and upper leg) muscles, which serve as the foundation for optimum strength and conditioning. Jay, as a strength and conditioning specialist, will closely monitor the athlete and make changes to the plan as needed.
