Sports Medicine Fellowships
Union Memorial’s Sports Medicine Fellowship program was established in 1981 as an integral part of Union Memorial Sports Medicine, Maryland's first comprehensive sports medicine program. Our goal is to provide a thoughtful, interactive learning environment in which orthopedic surgeons can learn the art and science of sports medicine.
Our program incorporates the six-core competency of patient care, medical knowledge, practice-based learning and improvement, interpersonal and communication skills, professionalism, and system-based practice. These competencies guide our educational efforts and the evaluation of fellows, teaching staff, and program performance. A central part of the program includes a mentorship/peer based learning experience with Leslie Matthews, M.D., John O'Donnell, M.D., Richard Hinton, M.D., MED, PT, and Richard Levine, M.D. There is also significant interaction with orthopedic surgeons in other subspecialties, non-orthopedic physicians, physical therapists, athletic trainers, allied health professionals, medical and educational administrators, orthopedic residents, and medical students.
Learning experiences are centered around direct participation in attending physician’s office practice; a graduated participation in hospital and surgi-center based operative cases; care of collegiate, scholastic and recreational athletes in the training room and on field environments; and an active research and didactic program. The program is divided into two six month rotations: one rotation provides coverage for the Johns Hopkins University and several local high school programs while the another provides coverage for Morgan State University, Goucher College, Villa Julie College, and assists with coverage for the Washington Redskins.
Throughout the year the fellow will be afforded opportunities to work with members of the Division of Foot and Ankle Surgery and Curtis National Hand Surgery staff on sports related cases. Ample time in both structured and flexible blocks is provided throughout the year for research, didactic teaching, and learning experiences.
Our program recognizes the fellowship-training year as a time for the assimilation and application of specialized sports medicine knowledge built upon a foundation of previous general orthopedic training. Therefore, there is no required emergency call, group coverage, or redundant team care requirements. Our program is based in a high volume, private practice/academic setting in a large community hospital. We have a long and successful track record in care of the athletes in the mid-Atlantic area. The sports medicine fellows are an integral part of our practices. Fellows are treated and respected as peers. They are afforded time for self-directed learning experiences and are provided with graduated responsibilities in operative, clinical, and on field care. In turn, fellows are expected to approach this opportunity in a responsible, mature manner.
