Smoking Cessation

MYTH: If you smoke, the damage is done so there's no point in quitting.

FACT: The body has a remarkable ability to repair itself and correct some of the damage done by smoking. Even if you have lung cancer, quitting smoking will allow your body to respond better to treatment and reduce the odds of recurrence.

Are you interested in decreasing your risk of getting lung cancer? By stopping smoking:

  • Within the first few years, the risk of developing cancer of the lung, larynx, and mouth are significantly decreased.
  • After 10-15 years, your risk of death from a smoking-related illness is almost half the same as the person who has never smoked.
  • Persons who quit smoking before the age of 50 have one half the risk of dying in the next 15 years compared to those who continue to smoke.

Do you want to stop smoking? If so, Union Memorial Hospital offers free smoking cessation clinics four times a year. Freedom From Smoking is an American Lung Assocation (ALA) sponsored program to help people not only quit smoking, but to remain quitters. It is taught by an ALA-certified facilitator and the program provides smokers with a comprehensive, highly structured behavior-oriented program, geared towards group interaction and support.

Freedom from Smoking classes are held in the hospital. For further information, or to register for this free program, call 1-866-488-LUNG (5864) or the Cancer Program office at 410-554-6590, or get more information about Freedom from Smoking.
