Fertility - Center for A.R.T. at Union Memorial
Assisted Reproductive Technologies
The decision to become a parent is an important one. Unfortunately, infertility can get in the way of those plans. Infertility knows no boundaries — it affects people of all races, economic classes and geographic areas.
Any therapy designed to improve an infertile couple's chances of parenting is defined as Assisted Reproductive Technologies, or ART. Since 1991, the ART Program at Union Memorial has helped thousands of men and women confronting fertility issues.
Most patients are referred to an ART program by their family practice physician, gynecologist, urologist or occasionally an oncologist. A full range of diagnostic testing is available at Union Memorial to assess various factors resulting in the inability to conceive. The staff also offers referrals to comprehensive genetic counseling, mental health professionals, third-party individual and couples counseling, support groups, seminars, community education and legal counsel for adoption, known or anonymous egg donors and surrogate carriers.
Because male factor accounts for at least 35 percent of infertility, it is crucial for all male partners to undergo a comprehensive evaluation. Causes of male infertility are diverse, and both medical and surgical therapies can enhance a man's fertility status. Common surgical procedures include vasectomy reversal and sperm retrieval procedures.
There are several other treatment options available to increase a couple's chances of conceiving. Our services include, but are not limited to:
- Artificial insemination (spouse or donor)
- Donor oocyte program (Read one patient's egg donor success story » )
- Inducing ovulation
- Intracytoplasmic sperm injection (ICSI)
- In vitro fertilization
- Laparoscopic surgery
- Microsurgery
- Surrogacy
- Tubal ligation reversal
The ART Program is staffed by physicians and technicians who are recognized as experts in their field. The staff realizes that each patient has a unique set of questions and concerns, so patients are provided with all of the details they need to make an informed choice. Unlike some infertility programs, there are no waiting lists or mandatory group sessions. Instead, each patient receives a personalized consultation. Early morning and evening appointments are available for patients with busy schedules.
