Emergency Care

At Union Memorial Hospital, we know that anyone can have an emergency at any time, which is why our Emergency Department (ED) is open 24 hours a day, every day.

Having a medical emergency can be scary, but it doesn’t have to be. At Union Memorial, we’re here to help you in times of a medical emergency by giving you the best care possible. Everyone who comes to our Emergency Department will be treated, regardless of their ability to pay.

Emergency Medical Team

Union Memorial staffs a core group of emergency physicians, including a pediatrician, who are board-certified in emergency medicine. Their goal is to find out what your medical problem is and to treat your condition. Our emergency physicians will work with your own physician if long-term treatment is needed. If you do not have a regular physician, our ED staff can help find one for you.

Emergency Care

All of the patients who arrive at our Emergency Department are treated based on their medical needs, not necessarily on a first come, first served basis. Patients with a serious or life-threatening illness or injury will be treated right away. Patients with a less serious conditions may need to wait. When you arrive to our ED, you will first be seen by a triage nurse who will determine how serious your condition is. This nurse will ask you questions about your medical history. Please give the nurse complete and correct information. This information will remain confidential.

Flexcare

For minor emergencies, Union Memorial Hospital offers Flexcare, where the most common emergency medical issues can be treated in 90 minutes or less. Flexcare is located near the Emergency Room and is available seven days a week from 7 AM to 11 PM.

Some types of injuries and illnesses typically seen in our Flexcare are:

  • Sprains and some broken Bones
  • Skin and tissue injuries, such as cuts and puncture wounds without excessive bleeding
  • Earaches
  • Flu and infections
  • Bronchitis, congestion and coughs
  • Minor allergic reactions with swelling or itching
  • Bites from animals or insects
  • Minor foreign body removal

Visitors

You may or may not be able to have visitors while in the treatment room. Your physician will make this decision in your best interest. If you are permitted to have visitors, no more than two visitors may be in the treatment room with you at once. Anyone under the age of 18 must be accompanied by an adult. Other visitors can wait for you in the waiting room or visit our cafeteria on the first floor of the main hospital. We request that visitors refrain from bringing food into the treatment area.

Parking

There are five spaces reserved for Emergency Department parking on the first level of Garage B. Visitors can park there after dropping off patients at the emergency entrance. If you are parked in the garage, please ask your nurse for a parking pass.

Length of Stay

The time you spend in the Emergency Department depends on what types of tests and procedures are done. Depending on the test, it can take up to several hours for your results to come back to the emergency physician. Once you have been treated and your test results reviewed, the emergency physician will let you know whether you need to be admitted to the hospital or whether you can be released. If released, your emergency physician may refer you to a physician or a specialty clinic for additional treatment.

Admission

If you are admitted, the ED staff will work with the hospital staff so that you can be taken to your room as quickly as possible.

Discharge

If you are discharged from the ED, you will be given discharge instructions, such as how to take your medicine, when to see your doctor and what you can or cannot do with your condition. Your emergency physician also may refer you to a physician or a specialty clinic for additional treatment.
