Mallet Finger

What is it?

It is a rupture of the tendon at the tip of the finger.

What causes it?

It can be caused by a direct blow to the finger.

Symptoms

The first finger drops creating a mallet shape; it is usually not painful unless a piece of bone is broken as well.

Treatment

Non-surgical treatment involves immobilization of the joint in the extended position. This will allow the rupture to heal, and usually takes about 6-8 weeks. While most people respond to non-surgical treatment, some may require surgery to re-attach the tendon to the bone.
